From July 1st to October 18th Slovenski etnografski muzej (Slovene Etnographic Museum) in Ljubljana hosts travelling exhibition Marimekko: Fabric, Fashion, Architecture. The exhibition explores over a half century of the company’s history, focusing on the work of the talented designers who defined the firm’s identity, tracing its sometimes-turbulent ascent from a local textile print works to an internationally recognized brand. It’s been a couple of years now since Silvio Vujičić (b. 1978), then a young student at Zagreb’s Faculty of Textile Technology and the Academy of Fine Arts, was touted in the media as one of the most promising Croatian fashion designers.

The Cabinet of Curiosities / Le Cabinet de Curiosités
Every year some 70 – 100 interested students apply for courses in the fashion department of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Some 10 per cent pass the entrance exams o the basis of their work and talent. In total, roughly 40 students study – at all levels – in the fashion department here.
The fashion department team includes a small group of highly-qualified tutors who plan the artistic curriculum and teach under the guidance of Veronique Branquinho.

Fashion scouts are cracking containers with clothes discarded and donated to the hillbillies. In line (together) with the homeless, they’re waiting for the Red Cross handout bringing heaps (containers) of clothes into the ateliers of the renowned designers of the fashion metropolises. As the gap between rich and poor widens, the urban-versus-rural barrier breaks. Country boys are turning into adventure undertakers. Suntanned studio-types are casting themselves in front of beauty salons. They’re all wearing camouflage suits in the city or the country, and now and then it protects them from their own species. Perfect!

Peter Piškurič practices a dedicated passion – making dance shoes fit for a queen
Peter Piškurič loves to dance. “But only when the time is right”, he adds with a big smile. His father was a better dancer than he is, and really loved – and knew how – to have a good time. That’s one of the main reasons he opened his little shoe store on Židovska street, in Ljubljana, more than 40 years ago – “for nice occasions”, he offers.
