Sushi, sashimi, kebab, spring rolls, paella, pizza. One of the most evident signs of globalisation is actually food. In any big city the world over you can eat most any kind of cuisine. Chinese restaurants were probably the first serving ethnic food abroad; today the cooler include Japanese sushi or what’s called “fusion” food – a mixture of ingredients from many cultures.

plasche

“Plasche” is a bag with changeable plastic jackets. The core is sewn out of denim or terry cloth while the exterior is composed of different plastic bags. So you buy the inside once and enhance the outer look. Available in two sizes: 25×35 cm or 20×20 cm. The designer’s work is largely an ironic view on people using objects and giving them different stories and souls before throwing them away. Design: kubiquelle, Austria

Each day we find more innovative, eye-catching bags out there. They make for a great creative playground and a cheap but effective marketing tool. Some bag facts: polyethylene is cheaper and lighter than paper, which is why shopping bags are largely made of plastic. You can reuse them as either garbage bags, or recycle them along with other plastic containers. But sooner or later, these thin plastic creatures will take over the world. While most stores provide cheap, reusable shopping bags in an effort to cut down on costs and waste, many more out there don’t. The solution: take your own bag and transform it into a new, durable – ad flashy – one.

Jakob Odgaard, Bang & Olufsen

Bang & Olufsen is known for its products which every time created a new user experience and earned an iconic status, a lasting value. Is this still the case? Is it still possible to permanently satisfy the buyer? We know that nowadays with Hi-Tech products it is explicitly all about trends which do not follow certain standards, such as sustainability, longevity of the product etc.
At Bang & Olufsen, we recognize the importance of identifying, cultivating and maximizing our strengths. Our core competences are the glue that binds us together as a company and the engine of new business development. Although we have many areas of expertise, we have identified not just three, but EIGHT areas, which we refer to as core competence areas – quality, picture, sound, user interaction, design, integration, mechanical movements, materials and finish.

Scott Klinker

Scott Klinker thoughts about relation between design and innovation and challenges for designers today.

What is the role of design in innovating new products in a global market? How do designing and innovating coexist and interact in the development process of new products?
Design excels at communicating new cultural ideas to the public by giving form to user experience. Innovation excels at defining design and business opportunities to improve strategic business models. These processes are often layered together and happen concurrently. Truly transformational ideas will push to the cutting edge of both communication and strategy. MORE…

Greta Godnič is a scenographer. By training she’s an architect, but at heart she’s a television scenographer. “The most beautiful thing to happen in my life is for me to be able to do scenography”. There aren’t many opportunities for this kind of work in Slovenia so she feels privileged. Perseverance, extensive knowledge, and the love of her work find expression in convincing results, when an empty television studio is transformed into a sparkling new fairy tale.

Evolution Accelerated

This year has been a big year in technology-driven and related sectors, which in turn has created a big stir in the (largely consumer) marketplace and back again in tech- and design-driven products and services.

Popular consumer electronics got a shot in the arm with Apple’s new iPhone 3G, which launched mid-July and sold one million units inside three days. Apple CEO Steve Jobs pointed out that it took all of 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so things were clearly “off to a good start”. MORE…

Automotive Experience

In the 2008 automotive line-up, more is definitely more.

This year in the automotive sector is one of transition and re-affirmation, with manufacturers generally choosing to go one of two ways: back to the past, falling back on nostalgia-rich tradition; or forward with new technologies and design formulations. The (fuel-electric) hybrids introduced just a couple of years back are seeing refinements and improvements, and more models in the line-ups offered in a hybrid version.
