Let the kindergarten become a place where an architect’s play with space blends with a child’s play. We are presenting the newly announced result of the architectural competition for kindergarten in Ribnica which is to be the biggest kindergarten in Slovenia. The winning solution designed by Bojan Mrežar, Renato Rajnar and Peter Rijavec will have twenty playrooms and will measure 4,500 m2. 360 children will play and learn there. MORE…

Gallery DESSA was formed in 1989 in order to establish a space for sharing and learning about different architectural ideas. The point of departure of the Temporary dwelling unit designed to solve residential hardships following natural disasters, which brought Nina Hercog and Mateja Martini the university student Prešeren Award, presents an in-depth analysis of the state of climate change and existing tools and installations that can solve dwelling problems in the aftermath of natural disasters. The students also accurately examined guidelines and development of the living culture of the 20th Century with an emphasis on the period following the Second World War. Their work lead them to a detailed study and analysis of a major natural disaster and the method of solving dwelling problems both in Slovenia and on a larger, global scale. MORE…

Since 2003, Month of Design has been presenting awards and singling out those designers, businesses and organisations that have significantly contributed to Slovene design. Zavod Big’s annual National Design Awards recognise design excellence on the corporate, individual and institutional level, in many categories from a number of fields, including industrial and consumer design, architecture, fashion, technology and more.
The main National Design Awards are: Designer of the Year, Interior of the Year, Success story, Timeless Slovenian Design, and Young Prospective Designers.

This monument to fallen defenders in the Croatian Homeland War presents four rivers that are crossing Kalovac area: Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra. In May 2010 Zavod Big hosts its third annual international architectural conference, with subject-theme “Transformation”.
How does architecture transform our environments, together with the very programs of these environments? How can innovative and inspiring design transform the way architecture does this; and shape the architectures practiced today and in the future?
A selection of internationally-engaged architects addresses these issues through their exceptional work and through a dynamic dialogue-process within the framework of ‘Transformation’.

ARX Portugal Arquitectos was founded in 1991 by José Paulo Mateus and Nuno Mateus. The office’s work represents a wide range of projects, from private and public commissions in Portugal and abroad to several international competitions.
Nuno Mateus served as Director of Architecture Department, Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, and currently teaches Design Studio at FAUTL and Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. José Mateus has taught at ESARQ-UIC in Barcelona, and at the ESAD in Lisbon.

Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Tegnestuen Vandkunsten architect office was established in 1970. Some 40 years later, the quality of housing – low-cost and social housing in particular – remains the office’s foremost concern, though their work covers all aspects of the profession across Europe. Jens Thomas Arnfred is a co-founder and principal partner of Tegnestuen Vandkunsten. He has received, together with his partners, more than 60 first prizes in national, Nordic and international competitions, including the Alvar Aalto Medal in 2009.

Carme Pinós worked in partnership with Enric Miralles until 1991, developing projects that include the Igualada Cemetery Park, the Archery Range Buildings for the 1992 Olympic Games and the La Llauna School in Badalona.
In 1991 she set up her own studio, producing work that includes the Pedestrian Bridge in Petrer (Alicante), the Cube Tower in Guadalajara (Mexico), and the Primary School in Castelldefels (Barcelona). Since then she has combined practice, teaching, and working as a founder of the Spanish National Museum of Architecture and Urban Space Partronage.

Zvi Hecker’s office in Berlin was established in 1991 alongside the Tel-Aviv practice in Israel, where the office has also built extensively. Recently the Berlin office has been involved in several projects in Berlin, Amsterdam and on the Baltic Sea, and it regularly takes part in international competitions.

The Zurich-based EM2N architects was established in 1997 by the firm’s principals Mathias Müller and Daniel Niggli. The office aims to produce architecture that is powerful and personal, with the ability to develop its own character. As a result their projects tend to polarise the public, which is fine, offer Müller and Niggli. “One may love or hate our architecture, but never be left indifferent.” Both Müller and Niggli are currently visiting professors at the acclaimed ETHZ – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb—the largest publicly funded cultural project since Croatian independence in 1991—has finally opened its doors in December. The opening marked the culmination of a frustratingly drawn-out process, with the decision to create a museum first being made in 1998. A new building, designed by Croatian architect Igor Franic, has been created to house the museum, which holds collections of Croatian and foreign works from the 1950s to the present. Despite the delay and budget cuts that accompanied building construction, the new museum is extensive, covering a total area of 15,000 sq. m. The ambitious project is the first museum to be built in Zagreb in 125 years. MORE…

She writes articles and interviews related to the art and cultural life in her country and the world.
