Sabine Seymour has been described as an innovator, visionary, and trend spotter. She is the Chief Creative Officer of her company Moondial, which develops fashionable wearables and consults on fashionable technology to companies worldwide. Moondial’s work is based on the convergence of fashion, design, textile, wearable and wireless technologies. Sabine is also Assistant Professor of Fashionable Technology and Director of Fashionable Technology Lab at Parsons The New School for Design in New York. She recently published the well-received book Fashionable Technology, The Intersection of Design, Fashion, Science, and Technology. Sabine curates, exhibits and lectures internationally, and has been published worldwide. She floats between New York and Vienna.
Her most recent project is SUN, the conversion of a static interface into a dynamic one by the simple natural power of the sun. It’s a new series of shirts by Moondial and the fashion label Wendy & Jim. A limited edition is launched at the Ars Electronica Festival 2009 in September 2009. SUN is using the shirt as a canvas to tell a story and uses the sun as the switch to turn on the graphic, and as such the static graphic becomes an interactive story.
At Design Conference 09, Sabine Seymour presents Fashionable Wearables – ‘designed’ garments, accessories, or jewellery that combine aesthetics and style with functional technology (as described in her recent book Fashionable Technology). While aesthetically pleasing design is an integral part of the success of a fashionable wearable, the context truly determines the functional and expressive definition of a fashionable wearable. Fashionable wearables have great expressive potential that is amplified through the use of technology and innovative materials. The limitless possibilities for the immediate dynamic personalisation of clothing and accessories are fascinating. Seymour shows current experimentation and products in this promising industry.
