BBB Low-Cost Housing, Denmark, by Tegnestuen Vandkunsten

The concept “bedre billigere boliger” – literally “better cheaper housing” – was developed through a number of architectural competitions. The aim – in Kvistgård, Elsinore, Denmark, was to offer significantly reduced rent-levels without sacrificing architectural quality.
Architects tegnestuen vandkunsten won the competition back in 2004; the project has been developed and built over the period 2004-2008.
Four different courtyard houses are achieved by combining 5.2×5.2 meter modules. Nine by nine, the courtyard houses are gathered around intimate communal spaces, with the kitchens always looking into these spaces. The resulting enclaves are placed freely in the gently sloping landscape.

Facades are carbonized baked or heat-treated) wood and aluminium. The windows are not particularly inexpensive but the client was looking for certain details whereby he could increase the quality of his project in more-or-less single move.
