Hyper-Urban: TOO49 by 16A
Japanese architects 16A recently completed TOO49, a housing complex of 43 studios and 6 two-bedroom units. These courtyard flats play smartly with the ideas of closeness and openness, and help lend the building its simple yet very distinctive look.
The building volume was cut at a certain angle paying particular attention to shadow control, and wears a natural black slate on it, which forms a solid mass to secure the residents’ privacy.
At the same time, the sloping roof lends it the appearance of a specifically urban structure with characteristic openings on each courtyard. Proposed in this project was a prototype for stacking courtyard houses which reduces spaces between units considerably, making it a hyper-urban scheme.
This out-of-scale block can be imposed, says the office, on any town, and will blend in with the neighborhood as the roof texture evolves and improves with age.
